Sustainable Leather Goods Treasured for a Lifetime
When it comes to leather, there are two main types: veg-tan and chrome-tan.
"Tan" or tanning refers to the process of converting a raw skin into a long-lasting piece of leather.
Veg-tan leather (short for vegetable-tanned) is made using organic materials such as tree bark and other plant matter. This process is more time-consuming and expensive, but the end result is a high-quality, durable leather that will age beautifully over time.
On the other hand, chrome-tan leather is made using chromium salts. This process is faster and cheaper, and the resulting leather is softer and more pliable. However, it may not be as durable as veg-tan leather and may not age as well.
Ultimately, the choice between veg-tan and chrome-tan leather comes down to personal preference and the intended use of the leather. Veg-tan leather is great for products that will be used for a long time and need to be durable, such as belts, wallets, and shoes. Chrome-tan leather is better suited for products that require a softer, more pliable leather, such as purses and jackets.
Our choice to exclusively use veg-tan leather is for environmental reasons. We want to use materials that use organic matter in it's production, and avoid the heavy metals (chromium). Great steps forward are being taken in the leather industry to improve the chrome-tanning process so do watch this space in he future!
Overall, choosing veg-tan leather is a great choice for those looking for a sustainable and eco-friendly material that also has a unique, natural look and feel.

Leather Artisan
I'm Sarah, founder and owner of Stagworx leather. Nestled away on a small farm near Whanganui, New Zealand, I have a long lasting love of natural, quality goods. I design and make my leather pieces with practicality in mind. They're made to last, withstand the elements, and maintain a personal touch. Check out my store, or get in touch today if you have a special leather piece you would like made.
With a passion for natural materials, we create high quality leather goods to last a lifetime.
Each Stagworx piece is made from 100% full-grain leather that goes through an all natural vegetable-tanning process using tree bark and other organic materials.
The result? High quality leather that is biodegradable, and doesn't harm the environment during it's creation. No chemicals. No acids. No Chromium.
Every leather piece that requires stitching, is hand saddle stitched with linen thread. We choose this method over machine stitching, as we know saddle stitches last longer and are more reliable. At Stagworx Leather we value quality over speed.
Once crafted, all our leather goods are finished using natural oils and beeswax. As a result, our goods each have a unique look, that will age beautifully.
Why choose Stagworx Leather goods?
From nature. Returned to nature. With a lifetime of use in between.
Our Five Year Stitching Guarantee:
We back the quality of our materials and work.
Every piece that leaves our workshop is covered by our five year stitching warranty. Our guarantee covers any faults in the stitching of our products, when used under normal conditions.
The guarantee does not cover normal wear and tear, or wearing out over time.
If there is a failure in the stitching in the first 5 years, simply return to us for re-stitching free of charge.
All our goods can be repaired for a small fee at any time in their life. Full-grain leather can last a lifetime if conditioned regularly and cared for. We do not expect any issues with the leather. And stitching can always be re-done if ever needed.
